The Pakistani government and Afghanistan’s ruling Taliban agreed on Wednesday to a temporary 48-hour ceasefire after new clashes broke out this week and more than a dozen civilians and soldiers were killed.

The terms of the ceasefire remain unclear, and neither the Pakistani nor the Taliban foreign ministries immediately responded to Fox News Digital’s questions, but reports on Wednesday suggested the Pakistani foreign ministry was seeking dialogue to resolve the complex conflict.

According to Reuters, both Pakistan and Afghanistan blamed each other for the weekend clashes on their common border; This led to the worst fighting either side has seen since the Taliban captured Kabul in 2021.

There have long been regular clashes along the 1,600-mile-long border due to land disputes, but since the Taliban took over in 2021, Islamabad has accused the Taliban of providing safe haven to anti-Pakistan militants.

The Taliban claimed on Wednesday that Pakistani forces had launched an attack on the city of Spin Boldak, just over the shared border in Afghanistan’s Kandahar province, killing more than a dozen civilians and wounding more than 100.

According to Reuters, Pakistan also claimed that four civilians were injured in attacks by Taliban forces in Chaman, the region directly opposite Afghanistan’s Spin Boldak.

New clashes appear to have broken out between soldiers and militants at a second site in Pakistan’s northern Orakzai district; where Islamabad said six Pakistani paramilitary soldiers were killed and two security personnel were injured.

It was reported that nine militants were killed following the violence that allegedly broke out during the search by Pakistani forces in the region, which was attacked by militants last week and 11 Pakistani soldiers were killed.

Reports on social media also suggested that a Pakistani intelligence office was hit in an incident in Peshawar, a city just north of Pakistan’s Orakzai province, on Wednesday, but Fox News Digital was unable to independently confirm this.

President Donald Trump said last week he could help end the conflict between Afghanistan and Pakistan, but neither side has said it has a role to play in the current ceasefire and the White House did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s questions on the matter.
