Palantir calls its ‘former hobbits’ back with Lord of the Rings-style message: ‘The shrine is calling’

Palantir invites former employees to join the company with ‘Lord of the Rings’ references.

Ted Mabrey, Palantir’s global chief commercial officer, urged “old hobbits” to return to the “shire” in separate posts on X and LinkedIn on Monday.

In Monday’s X post, Mabrey said this is the perfect time for former employees to return to Palantir.

“Old hobbits. If you have thought of returning to the Palantir, this week is the time to do so,” he said.

The new call comes at a time when artificial intelligence is driving conversations not just in boardrooms but also at the government level.

“The world is demanding every last ounce of creative energy we can muster. If you come back, you’ll be on the plane the first day and within a few hours of getting your laptop you’ll be cranking out the code that matters,” Mabrey said.

Palantir’s top executive promised a sense of job satisfaction to employees who are willing and able to return to the company.

“From the trench pit to the factory floor, the surface area that can instantly support something incredibly meaningful is enormous. I promise you nothing but the satisfaction that comes from the purpose and intensity of the most intense deployments you’ve ever worked on,” he said.

“If you’re after that spark, come find it again. The realm is calling,” Ted Mabrey added, ending his post with another popular Lord of the Rings reference.

His message touched on the company’s long-standing affection for JRR Tolkien, author of the Lord of the Rings series. Palantir is named after the palantíri, the mystical “seeing stones” in “The Lord of the Rings.”

However, Mobrey did not say anything about salary or compensation in his post and only mentioned the intensity of the work.

Palantir sends hiring message during AI review

Palantir’s message to former employees comes at a time of increased scrutiny on artificial intelligence over how these tools are being used by governments for military and surveillance purposes as conflict in the Middle East intensifies.

Last week, the US government canceled its contract with Anthropic over the AI startup’s claim that it did not allow the federal government to use the tool to track US citizens and automate the launch of weapons.

Following the termination of the contract with Anthropic, the US government turned to OpenAI, a move that drew criticism online.

Palantir, which has about 4,000 employees, develops software platforms used for big data analysis by companies and government agencies, including military and intelligence agencies.

This call also comes at a time when Wall Street is bullish on Palantir; because the growth potential of the company’s defense business brings excitement to the shares again after four months of sales.

The data analytics software company, which derives about half its revenue from U.S. government and military contracts, rose 5.8% on Monday, bringing its four-session gain to 13%. The rally began last week as President Donald Trump escalated his threats against Iran and continues amid U.S. and Israeli military strikes on the country.

Palantir shares fell 1.6% on Tuesday, driven by a broader sell-off in equity markets.
