‘No energy’ – Thomas Tuchel unhappy at ‘silent’ Wembley during England’s win over Wales

Former England defender Stephen Warnock, who was part of the BBC Radio 5 Live commentary team, understood Tuchel’s concern and felt home fans should stay behind the team.

“We can’t gauge the atmosphere as we are in a stand, but it was mentioned a few times in our comments about the atmosphere how good the Wales fans were,” he said. “You have to honestly admit if that’s what he’s feeling.

“His performance guaranteed a good response from fans. It’s disappointing that he feels this way.”

But he felt Tuchel would still retain the support of England fans.

Warnock added: “Is that a negative? It depends on how you interpret it as a supporter. It depends on whether you’ve got it wrong or whether you think you could have done more and supported the team more. “It’s very difficult in international football, obviously.

“Maybe more needs to be done behind the scenes to create fan bases where you can get the atmosphere going and get the songs going.

“But if I was sitting in the stands and that comment was made, I would be thinking about what more I could do to help the team. The fans help you and give you that energy.”

“It’s important at the World Cup to have these little pockets together and all singing from the same hymn sheet. Maybe that’s something they can look at and help the team.”
