Perth man jailed for 7 years for child abduction plot, sex doll import

A Perth man who tried to import a child sex doll was revealed to have hatched a kidnapping plot, with authorities uncovering research into local nurseries and how to restrain children.

The 37-year-old man pleaded guilty to several charges and was sentenced to seven years and five months in prison, Western Australia Police and the Australian Border Force said on Tuesday.

In addition to researching and compiling notes on kindergartens, schools, and early learning centers, the man had detailed written diagrams outlining an intended abduction process and modified his roof and attic in preparation for an abduction.

He also pleaded guilty in court to possessing child abuse material.

“The initial detection of a childlike sex doll smuggled into Australia by (Australian Border Force) has resulted in the discovery of an alarming number of additional crimes,” Border Force Commander Ranjeev Maharaj said.

“This case is further evidence that these childlike sex dolls are far from harmless and may contribute to desensitization of individuals to the horrific damage caused by child sexual abuse.”

Border Force officers seized the banned childlike sex doll in mid-2024.

Police and Border Force officers searched the man’s home in Baldivis, a southern suburb of Perth; Inside there were extensive traces of planned child abduction and abuse.

Authorities said in a statement that the man repeatedly searched online for schools and daycares, mapped other places where children had been, wrote plans for how to approach, isolate and restrain the child, and drew diagrams of how to abduct a child.

The man had modified his roof and attic with restricted access, which police believed indicated he was planning a kidnapping.

A large amount of child abuse material was found on their devices.

He pleaded guilty to attempted possession of childlike sex dolls, using a carriage service to prepare for or plan to engage in sexual activity with a child under 16, and possession of child abuse material.

He has since been sentenced to almost 7½ years in prison.

WA Police freeze his bank accounts, home and vehicle; Anything used in the commission of crimes may be subject to confiscation as the police crime squad works on the proceeds.

“Detectives in child exploitation operations are reporting offenders,” WA Police Detective Acting Inspector David Palmer said.

“If you harm children or engage in any form of child abuse, you will be found, charged, face a significant prison sentence and we will seize your assets.

“This investigation is a clear example of early intervention preventing harm to children.

“Through the identification of relevant behavior and extensive preparatory planning, WA Police were able to disrupt the offender’s actions before any children were physically harmed.”
