Perth mountaineer dies while climbing Nepal’s Himlung Himal
“Tragically, the client died below Camp 3 before a safe weather window was provided,” the Global Rescue statement read.
Chan’s friends took to social media over the weekend to pay tribute to him.
Chan died just one day before his 50th birthday, Mirellie Human said.
“Your lifelong passion for mountain climbing has been admirable; I have always admired it and loved what you have accomplished,” he said.
“You were so smart, funny and kind, had a charismatic nature that was priceless, and always made us all smile and laugh so hard.
“My heart is broken and my mind can’t comprehend it.”
A fundraiser for Chan raised over $7,500 in just a few days. Donations will go to Sherpa rescuers in hopes of providing resources and training opportunities to help future climbers.
“Recently our beloved Chinny tragically passed away at Himlung Himal in Nepal,” family and friends wrote on the fundraising page.
“We are overwhelmed by the amount of love and support we have received. Although we cannot respond to all of you right away, please know that we are so grateful for you and how much you love our Chinny.
“While no words can alleviate this loss, we choose to honor Chinny’s memory by giving back to those who make high-altitude exploration possible: the devoted Sherpas of Nepal.”
They said Sherpas risk their lives on every climb and “their courage, skill and dedication make each expedition possible, but they often work with limited support or protection.”
“In Chinny’s honor and in lieu of flowers, we are raising funds to provide direct assistance to Sherpa communities and rescue teams and ensure they have the resources, training and care they deserve.
“We will work closely with Chinny’s friends in Nepal to ensure funds are distributed where they are needed most.
“Thank you for helping us honor Chinny’s adventurous spirit and giving back to the people he deeply admired.”
