Perth weather: Man injured after being struck by lightning walking dog near Hamersley Golf Course, Karrinyup

A man walking his dog was injured when he was struck by lightning in a northern suburb of Perth this morning.

The man, in his 70s, was near Hammersley Golf Course in Karrinyup at around 9.30am during Thursday morning’s storm.

St John WA paramedics took the man to Royal Perth Hospital by ambulance under normal road conditions.

The injured person’s condition is serious but not life-threatening.

The dog’s condition is not yet known.

The storms caused Perth’s first significant downpour since December and forced the closure of train lines across the city on Thursday.

Lightning caused “technical issues” affecting the train network’s signaling, causing trains to be canceled on the Mandurah Line between Elizabeth Quay and Aubin Grove in the Perth CBD, as well as cancellations on the Yanchep and Thornlie Cockburn lines.

Approximately 3,000 homes were left without electricity in suburbs such as Balga, Hamersley, Hamilton Hill, Innaloo, Parmelia and Palmyra.

Western Power said power was expected to be restored by 1pm.

The Bureau of Meteorology said the storms were driven by deepening west coast troughs.

While southeast winds are expected to hit Perth in the morning, BoM predicts that southwest winds will be effective in the afternoon.

“Low rainfall is expected generally around the metro area, with low-intensity heatwaves continuing across the region, with a maximum temperature of 29C for Perth,” a spokesperson said.
