Steve Witkoff, a private ambassador, said on Sunday that Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to allow US and European countries to allow “5 -like protection” as a security guarantee to end the war in Ukraine.
“We were able to win the following privilege: the US could offer five similar protection, which is one of the real reasons why Ukraine wants to be in NATO,” Witkoff said on Sunday. Cnn.
“We’ve heard of the Russians for the first time,” he continued.
Article 5 of NATO says, “The victim of an NATO ally armed attack is that each member of the alliance will consider this violence as an armed attack against all members and think it is necessary to assist the ally attack.”
European Commission President Ursula von Der Leyen said in a statement on Sunday, welcomed security guarantees for Ukraine and said, “The European Union … ready to share.” Associated Press.
Witkoff’s words come only days after President Donald Trump’s meeting in Alaska with Putin and his country in the midst of the ongoing war with Ukraine. Trump and the administration greeted the negotiations as “productive”, but the details of the meeting have been inadequate.
Trump has repeatedly stressed the need for an emergency, long -lasting ceasefire in the war, leading to meeting with Putin.
The negotiations did not make such an agreement between the authorities in Ukraine and European nations, which created the concern that Trump had moved away from the target.
However, Trump, however, has been the best way to end the war since the talks, “Going a direct peace agreement”.
Witkoff said on Sunday, Trump and Putin said during the meeting that lasted for hours without giving additional details.
“We started to see a little moderate as they think of reaching a final peace agreement,” he said.
Peace agreement ‘Still Long Roads’
Minister of Foreign Affairs Marco Rubio said in a statement on Sunday, Trump’s effort to end the war, “if it doesn’t work,” Russia will “face additional results”, but warned against the application of additional sanctions.
“When you give additional sanctions, strong additional sanctions, speech stops,” he said ABC News.
Rubio added a peace agreement, “We’re still a long way away.”
“We have made progress in the sense that we have identified potential agreements, but there are some great disagreements,” he said. He continued: “We are not on the abyss of a peace agreement, we are not on the edge of someone, but I think someone has made progress towards someone.”
Trump will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European leaders on Monday.
What is in question
If the Kremlin actually accepted the security conditions similar to Article 5 of NATO for Ukraine, there would be a clear attempt than at least one of the previous reasons for the Russian President’s attack on the country.
Russia said that any decision of the war should address the “main causes of conflict”, and in the most important way, Ukraine should abandon and abandon its desire to join NATO.
The Kremlin made it clear that any peace agreement would annex the Crimea and to include an international recognition of significant parts of Eastern Ukraine.
After the summit of Friday, Trump said that if Zelenskyy agreed to give up the Donbas region, a peace agreement could be reached. New York Times ReportIt refers to senior European authorities.
However, Zelenskyy decided that even the regions that Moscow already annexed would not even recognize any of the sovereign lands of Kiev as part of Russia. The President of the Ukraine said that doing this would violate the country’s constitution. Ukraine also said he wanted any peace agreement to guarantee that Russia would never invade again.
