Philip Rivers calling it quits again

Philip Rivers announced his retirement from the NFL on Wednesday after leaving high school football coaching to play for the Indianapolis Colts.

Rivers appeared “Up and Adams” Before the end of the year, he said he was really done this time and would turn his attention to the team he was coaching.

“I’m done,” Rivers said. “I have a son who is going to be a senior and I got the St. Michael football team ready. We lost in the semifinals two years in a row,” Rivers said. “So this will be his senior year. My second son will be in ninth grade. They will be on the same team together.

“So it’ll be fun to be back home with the kids. School was really excited. A lot of them came to the game last week. It’ll be fun. At least it’ll kick off our offseason program. Maybe they’ll take the things I told them a little more seriously now, when I was out there playing.”

Rivers said he knew his job was done in 2020 and it was perfect timing to come back to replace Daniel Jones, who tore his Achilles this season.

He said if another team had called, he wouldn’t have had the chance to do what he did.

“Everything is sorted,” he said. “This was a place I’d been before, a team I was familiar with on offense, the exact same coach I knew. Those were all things that made it a perfect storm.

“I’m back on the sideline. This was a fun three-week blur that no one saw coming, including me, and that’s it.”

The Colts will start the final game of the season with Riley Leonard.

Rivers, 44, was a Pro Football Hall of Fame semifinalist before deciding to turn back the clock on retirement and join the Colts. Indianapolis couldn’t win with Rivers under center.

He had 544 passing yards, four touchdown passes and three interceptions in those three starts.

Rivers will walk away with 63,984 passing yards, 425 passing yards and an incredible story to tell.
