A massive fire broke out in a seven-story office building in central Jakarta on Tuesday, killing at least 20 people. As the flames quickly engulfed the structure, thick black smoke rose above the busy area, causing panic among nearby residents and office workers.
According to Reuters, citing local police, the fire started on the first floor at noon and reached higher levels. When the fire broke out, some employees were eating lunch inside, while others had gone out of the building.

Central Jakarta police chief Susatyo Purnomo Condro confirmed that the fire was under control and rescue teams continued to search for additional victims. “The fire has been extinguished and efforts are ongoing to search for more possible victims within the building,” Condro told reporters.
The death toll rose to 20 as of Tuesday afternoon. Authorities are prioritizing rescue operations and building security, Condro said. “We are currently focused on evacuating victims and cooling the building,” he added.
The building houses Terra Drone Indonesia, a subsidiary of Japan-based Terra Drone Corporation, which provides drone services in various industries including mining and agriculture.
Footage broadcast by Kompas TV showed firefighters taking body bags out of the building and helping workers escape from the upper floors using portable ladders.
