Planned Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot cancelled, says Sarah Michelle Gellar | Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Buffy The Vampire Slayer will not be returning, star Sarah Michelle Gellar has announced that the reboot of the ’90s supernatural fantasy series has been cancelled.

According to the actor, Disney-owned streaming platform Hulu has decided not to pick up the planned sequel.

Last year, it was reported that the ’90s series would return as Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, with Gellar returning as Buffy Summers.

The director of the series will be Chloé Zhao, the Oscar-winning director of films such as Nomadland, Eternals and most recently Hamnet.

But on social media this weekend, Gellar, 48, confirmed that the new series would no longer continue, claiming that Hulu had decided “not to move forward” with the series.

“I’m really sorry I had to share this, but I wanted you all to hear it from me,” he said in a video posted on Instagram. “Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with Buffy New Sunnydale.

“I want to thank Chloe Zhao because I never thought I’d find myself wearing Buffy’s stylish yet affordable boots again, and thanks to Chloe, I’m reminded of how much I love her and how much she means not only to me, but to all of you. And this doesn’t change any of that.”

Delivering one of the series’ most popular lines, Gellar added: “I promise, if the apocalypse really comes, you can still beep at me.”

Hulu has been contacted for comment.

The teen drama originally ran for seven seasons from 1997 to 2003 and followed Buffy as she hunted and fought vampires, demons, and other creatures throughout high school.

The series also starred How I Met Your Mother’s Alyson Hannigan, Charmed actress Charisma Carpenter and late Gossip Girl star Michelle Trachtenberg.
