After another deadly shooting involving federal immigration agents in Minneapolis on Sunday, former President Bill Clinton said agents were using “increasingly aggressive and hostile tactics” and that the Trump administration was telling Americans not to believe what they saw with their own eyes.

Alex Pretti, 37, was shot and killed by Border Patrol agents while recording federal immigration operations in Minneapolis on Saturday. Pretti, a critical care nurse, appeared to be trying to tend to a female agent who was pushed to the ground and beaten when she was sprayed with an irritant. An agent was seen removing Pretti’s gun from his waistband before other agents fired several shots, killing him.

The attack follows recent unrest over the ICE-involved killing of Renee Nicole Good in the same city earlier this month.

“In recent weeks, we have watched horrific scenes unfold in Minneapolis and other communities I never thought would occur in America. People, including children, were seized from their homes, businesses, and streets by masked federal agents,” Clinton said in a statement. he said.

“Peaceful protesters and citizens exercising their constitutional rights to observe and document law enforcement were arrested, beaten, tear gassed, and most violently, shot to death in the cases of Renee Good and Alex Pretti,” he continued.

Clinton said “this is unacceptable” and “should be avoided.”

“Worse still, the people responsible lied to us at every opportunity, told us not to believe what we saw with our own eyes, and employed increasingly aggressive and hostile tactics, including obstructing investigations by local authorities,” he said.

“We encounter only a few moments throughout our lives when the decisions we make and the steps we take will shape our history for years to come,” the former president added. “This is one of them. If we give away our freedoms after 250 years, we may never take them back. It’s up to all of us who believe in the promise of American democracy to stand up, speak out, and show that our nation still belongs to We the People.”
