Meghan Markle was given brutal two-word nickname by Prince Philip | Royal | News

The late Prince Philip’s grandson reportedly referred to his wife, Meghan Markle, by a simple two-word nickname, according to a royal historian. Hugo Vickers’ book ‘Queen Elizabeth II: A Personal History’ says that Prince Philip simply called Meghan Markle “American” before she married Prince Harry.

Prince Philip, who died in April 2021, just two months before his 100th birthday, had also previously drawn comparisons between Meghan and the divisive royal figure of an earlier era, calling her ‘DoW’, short for ‘Duchess of Windsor’, in reference to Wallis Simpson.

Speaking previously to GB News, royal expert Ingrid Seward suggested Philip believed Meghan bore an “uncanny” resemblance to Wallis, whose relationship with King Edward VIII triggered one of the most shocking upheavals in royal history.

Ms Seward added: “He wasn’t just talking about the fact that they were both slim, dark-haired and flamboyant American divorcées.”

She added: “I think Prince Philip was very careful about people and he didn’t always see the bad in them, he tried to see the good in them.

I guess he couldn’t escape the truth [of the] Similarities between Meghan and Harry and Edward and Mrs Simpson.

“There are so many similarities, which is why he called her the Duchess of Windsor, so not to her face.”

Vickers also wrote to Queen Elizabeth II. He also writes that the loss of Elizabeth was particularly difficult. After 73 years of marriage, he wasn’t there at the last moment.

“As so often in life, he left without saying goodbye,” writes Vickers, reinforcing the enduring image of Prince Philip as a strong-willed, independent and eminently practical man.
