Nalco charts green alumina path by 2030—even as coal expansion looms

Yeni Delhi: National Aluminum Co. LTD (NALCO) plans to start producing green alumina by 2030 and increases the renewable energy capacity of India in accordance with the energy passage and rising global carbon pavements. However, the company did not set any production target and announced that it did not expect to pass the renewable power until then.
Nalco will probably invest La1,575 Crore in renewable projects to support the green alumina initiative. This includes a new 15 megawatt (MW) wind plant and a renewable capacity of 200-300 MW. President and General Manager Brijendra Pratap Singh Mint Estimated Capex La5 Crore per MW.
In addition, the company will sign power purchase agreements with Sun and Wind Projects developers to close the gap.
“What we plan… Alumina, no matter what, is much less than the power requirement for this alumina. We have its own wind plants in Andhra and we have capacity in Tamil Nadu. So we will try to direct all these to our refineries.
Currently, Nalco is running 200 MW captive wind power. The company does not expect exactly from a complete carbon until 2030.
Uz We are thinking of entering for more green power for our green plant… But maybe 200-300 MW will go for more wind or green or perhaps hybrid model plants… He may rise if necessary. ”
Singh said the government’s instructions require at least 35-40% of the company’s general energy mixture to include renewable resources.
To meet this target, Nalco kept a consultancy for advice on the adoption of sun, wind or hybrid power with battery storage.
According to the annual report, India produced 7.52 million tons of alumina, where Nalco contributed 2.04 million tons. Alumina is the raw material used for aluminum production used in automobile, aircraft, train, electronics and other industries.
Nalco’s move comes to the indecision of global producers. Earlier this year, Rio Tinto and India’s AMG metals and minerals said that they would evaluate the feasibility of the low -carbon aluminum project, which was reinforced with renewable energy in India.
The push for greener production has concentrated with the European Union’s tariffs for carbon intensive imports and the carbon boundary adjustment mechanism, which will give similar measures into Southeast Asia.
Pragmatic movement
However, even if it expands the renewable capacity, Nalco doubles in coal to provide a stable, low -cost power for aluminum.
On Thursday, Singh told journalists, the company LaIn the next five years, a new izabe and coal -fueled electric power plant 30,000 Crore. Around La18,000 Crore will go to the İzabe facility in Odisha, Electrical Power Plant Balance, Coal India and NTPC Ltd. will be developed through a joint venture.
In addition to its domestic expansion, Nalco continues to focus on export markets. The company exports approximately 1.1 million tons of Alumina annually to West Asia.
Singh said this export profile protects the company’s new US tariffs on the Indian alumina. “We export about 11 lakh tons of alumina and most of them go to the Middle East (West Asia). So the US tariff will not affect the export of alumina. We do not export to the USA (except West Asia), because we receive better prices in the country.”
“In the international market, no matter what the prices we have passed, Nalco is not affected, but of course the tariffs will put pressure on prices, because the usability of the metal in the Indian market will increase due to some exports from other manufacturers, that is, India and some other countries.
