PM Modi holds key talks with UAE President Al Nahyan in New Delhi: Why does it matter?

United Arab Emirates (UAE) President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan arrived in India on Monday, January 19, for a short but important visit. The President was received by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at an airport in the capital New Delhi. As a special gesture, Prime Minister Modi shared a car with Al Nahyan while leaving the airport. The UAE leader’s visit lasted only a few hours.

“This was a short but extremely important visit. His Highness was personally received at the airport by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a special gesture characteristic of the extremely warm and close relationship shared by the two leaders,” External Affairs Minister Vikram Misri told a press conference. In a post on social media, Prime Minister Modi said Al Nahyan’s trip “shows the importance he attaches to a strong India-UAE friendship”. “I look forward to our discussions.”

According to reports, leaders of India and UAE held wide-ranging talks during the short visit. Some of the key focus areas of the discussion were energy security, civil nuclear cooperation, artificial intelligence (AI), defense cooperation, trade, investments and space technology. Both sides shared a series of agreements and letters of intent in the presence of the two national leaders.
