Sepsis leaves Cardiff medical student facing life with no limbs

A triathlet is ready to face life without a limb after being cut while fighting sepsis.

Lily McGarry, a medical student at the University of Cardiff from Jersey, believed that “Freshers’ flu” had a kindness.

“You feel a little invincible and you don’t want to worry about your health because you have a social life to live.”

Lily, described by her friends as a “fantastic athlete”, was passionate about swimming, running and being on the beach.

However, while lying in the bed of Cardiff’s Llandough Hospital, the normal student remembers that his lifestyle is turning upside down and thinks how he can return to an active lifestyle.

Im I felt a little under the air, but I was still going for my daily life, ”he said.

“I sat at home with my roommates.

“Then I put Gavin and Stacey on the couch all day.”

It was on January 14th and decided to sleep around 23:00 and added: “I just thought I was going to rest and sleep.”

But as the night passed, Lily’s condition worsened.

“When my roommate got up at night, he still saw my light and came to see me.

“I was sick everywhere and I was inconsistent.”

His friends Lucy and Ella cleaned him and took him to A & E, and at this point he noticed a rash that began to spread to his body.

Lily was taken to the resuscitation area and still unaware of the seriousness of its situation, I added: “I was able to get into A & E, and at this point I just thought that I would take some antibiotics and go home the next day.

“But I remember in the Messenger of Allah that the consultant wanted my mother and my father’s mobile phone numbers.”

In addition to being in a room surrounded by doctors and nurses, he remembers very little until about three months later.

Lily didn’t even know that she had a cardiac stance, and she describes it as “quite surreal” to learn from a article written by her sister.

“When I start looking at my body, I don’t really think I really noticed the scale of what happened until May.”

“I was told that I was quickly entering septic shock.

“My blood pressure was very low and I had two heart stops within 24 hours and I was diagnosed Meningococcal septicemia. “

Sepsis occurs when the body reacts inappropriate to infection and causes the organs to work poorly.

It can cause a dramatic decrease in blood pressure and damage the lungs, kidneys, liver and other organs.

According to British Sepsis Trust, one of the key difficulties in the identification of sepsis is that it can be presented in a very different way in each patient.

There are six basic symptoms to be considered:

Q – Speech or confusion

E – Excessive pain in muscles and joints

P – that urine does not pass in a day

Q – Severe shortness of breath

I – they say “it sounds like I’m going to die”

S – Spotted, colorless or very pale skin

“I’m lucky to lose my limbs in an age with too many technologies.” He said.

“I’ve always liked to swim and be in water, and I’m really excited about the feeling of freedom I will experience without gravity in water.

“I hope this may be soon.”

Lily will return to Jersey in November, and look forward to seeing her grandmother and grandfather, going to the beach and “healing and thinking what happened”.

His roommate Ella Jennings told how compassion and compassion he was and how Lily would come out of his own way to help others.
