PM Modi, NDA leaders meet amid Parliament logjam over exam reforms
The newly formed Nationalist Citizens’ Party of India (NCPI) was also invited to the alliance meeting for the first time. The meeting will take place at 9.30am at GMC Balayogi Auditorium, Parliament Library Building.

This will be the first time that former TMC rebels, who are now in NCPI, will attend today’s NDA Parliamentary Party meeting. NCPI MPs including Sudeep Bandopadhyay, Kakoli Ghosh, Shatabdi Roy, Sharmila Sarkar, Mitali Bagh and others are expected to be present. NDA’s weekly ‘BBQ Milan’ takes place during a stormy Monsoon Session. Opposition protests over examination reforms and alleged police intervention against students are among the main problems.
The meeting came after the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026 was introduced in the Lok Sabha by Union Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Jitendra Singh, forcing the House to adjourn amid continuous slogans from Opposition members.
The proposed legislation aims to strengthen the legal framework against paper leaks and examination malpractice through seven key amendments to the 2024 Act. It provides for time-bound investigations and trials, Special Expedited Tribunals, Special Task Forces, Special Public Prosecutors, enhanced penalties, higher financial penalties and a streamlined appeals mechanism.
The NDA has lined up a large number of young Members of Parliament, including BJP MPs Bansuri Swaraj and Tejasvi Surya, to participate in the four-hour debate on the bill. Other speakers are expected to include Alok Kumar Suman of JDU, Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu of TDP, Shrikant Shinde of Shiv Sena, Sunil Tatkare of NCP, Anupriya Patel of Apna Dal, Arun Bharti of LJP (Ram Vilas) along with allies Sharmila Sarkar and Mitali Bagh.Also Read: Delhi transport unions plan ‘E-20’ protest march to Parliament on August 4
The meeting assumes significance as the opposition continues to disrupt Parliament, demanding Union Home Minister Amit Shah to account for the alleged police action during the July 20 ‘Sansad Chalo’ protest and questioning the effectiveness of the proposed law.
In the previous meeting of the NDA Parliamentary Party ‘Barbecue Milan’ on July 21, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that the government “stands with the students” and emphasized that paper leaks are a national issue that should not be politicized.
Addressing reporters after the meeting, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said that the Prime Minister, in consultation with legal experts, had called for strict action against those involved in examination irregularities and reiterated that protecting the interests of students remains the priority of the government. He also underlined the government’s focus on farmers’ welfare while discussing the recently signed Free Trade Agreements with various countries.
