PM Modi writes to Nitish Kumar on Bihar Diwas, hails State’s rich culture and tradition

Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote a letter to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on the occasion of Bihar Diwas on Sunday, March 22, 2026, and conveyed his heartfelt greetings to the people of the state.

In his three-page letter, Mr. Modi said Bihar Diwas is a day to celebrate the rich history, potential and traditions of Bihar.

“This is an opportunity to remember Bihar’s invaluable contribution to India’s strong identity. Since ancient times, the land of Bihar has enriched society through knowledge, spirituality and moral values. The teachings conveyed by Lord Buddha in this land remain an integral part of the global consciousness today and continue to guide humanity,” he wrote in his letter shared by Mr. Kumar.

The Prime Minister emphasized that Bihar is the land that witnessed the influence of a great diplomat like Acharya Chanakya, who along with Emperor Chandragupta Maurya laid the foundations of a strong and united India.

Praising the people of Bihar, Mr. Modi said that the people of the State have created a distinct identity for themselves both within the country and globally, due to their hard work, honesty and talent.

“Whether in the service of society or the industrial world, in the field of education or in the field of arts and music, the contribution of the people of Bihar is unparalleled in every field. The innate spirit of the people of Bihar to move forward and achieve success together with everyone is truly commendable,” Mr. Modi said.

He pointed out that the people of Bihar carry the cultural richness and values of the state with them wherever they go. He recalled that during his tenure as Chief Minister, he observed very closely how the people of Bihar were contributing to the progress of Gujarat.

The Prime Minister said that a grand event was organized in Surat to mark the completion of 100 years of the formation of Bihar. He added that people from all walks of life came together at the event to celebrate the glorious heritage of Bihar.

“I have also witnessed Bihar culture flourishing in Mauritius, Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago. Even there, people attached to their Bihari roots have carefully preserved their culture. Today, the cultural traditions of Bihar are becoming globally recognized. The great Chhath festival stands as the strongest example of this and is now celebrated with great enthusiasm across the world,” Mr. Modi said.

Mr. Modi also wrote that Bihar gave a new direction to the nation during the freedom struggle and Mahatma Gandhi started the Satyagraha movement in Champaran.

He also highlighted that many leaders of Bihar made significant contributions to the preparation of the draft Constitution. “Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan inspired people to stand firm and resolutely oppose the attacks launched against the democratic order. Recently, the NDA government had the privilege of conferring the Bharat Ratna on Jannayak Karpoori Thakur, an honor that was widely applauded across the country.”

He described himself as lucky to be given the opportunity to accelerate Bihar’s development journey.

“Compared to the period between 2004 and 2014, the amount of Central assistance received by Bihar has witnessed a significant increase. This has given a significant impetus to large-scale development projects,” Mr. Modi said.

Welcoming the work of Bihar CM, Mr. Modi said, “Under your leadership, Bihar has witnessed tremendous transformation. Your personal commitment towards the welfare of all sections of society, along with good governance. I pray to God that Bihar continues to progress, sets new benchmarks of prosperity and remains an inspiration for future generations.”

Mr Kumar also thanked Mr Modi by writing a post on the social media platform X.

“On behalf of all the people of Bihar, I express my sincere gratitude and thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji for his loving message on the occasion of Bihar Diwas. It is a matter of pride for us that you appreciate Bihar’s rich heritage, culture and efforts towards progress,” Mr. Kumar said.
