Trump’s Thanksgiving vow to pause migration from poorer nations | US | News

President Donald Trump vowed to “permanently stop immigration” from what he called “poor nations” in a strongly worded post on social media on Thanksgiving night.
The comments come in the wake of Wednesday’s shooting in Washington, D.C., in which two National Guard members on patrol were injured, one of whom later died.
A 29-year-old Afghan citizen, who reportedly worked with the CIA during the Afghanistan War, was charged in connection with the incident.
In a post on the Truth Social platform, Trump claimed that “most” immigrants to the United States “come from welfare, failing countries, or prisons, mental hospitals, gangs, or drug cartels.”
In the early hours of Thanksgiving, Trump spoke to U.S. troops via video just hours before the National Guard member died from injuries sustained in the shooting.
The president had ordered the deployment of National Guard troops to the nation’s capital.
Immigration has been a focus of Trump’s presidency, and his administration has implemented policies to restrict both legal and illegal immigration.
Critics argue these measures are motivated by anti-immigrant sentiment, while supporters say they are necessary for national security and economic reasons.
