Police name victim of fatal stabbing near primary school in Birmingham

Police have released the name of the victim who was fatally stabbed in Birmingham on Tuesday.

Ali Alshmari, 30, was pronounced dead at the scene after police were called to Bridge Road in Alum Rock, Birmingham, on Tuesday.

A 32-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the stabbing.

Another woman was injured in the incident.

He suffered a hand injury but was later released from hospital.

In a statement, West Midlands Police said: “A knife believed to have been used in the attack has been seized and is being examined.

“As is routine when responding to a serious incident in which a weapon has been used in a public place, uniformed and plainclothes firearms officers attended the incident.

“The incident is not thought to be related to terrorism.

“We know this happened near a school and we are meeting with members of the local community today to discuss their concerns and reassure them.”

Detective Superintendent James Munro said: “This is a tragic and violent attack that claimed the life of Mr Alshmari and left a woman injured.

“We are doing everything we can to determine exactly what happened and why, and the public response has been fantastic.

“We have shared CCTV, dashcam and mobile footage with us which has been very useful to the investigation and I would urge anyone who has not yet contacted us to do so as soon as possible.

“We understand how distressing and worrying this incident is and we will have additional officers in the area to reassure the community.”

A nearby school in Bridge Road, Alum Rock, was put on lockdown after witnesses saw him stab another man in the street shortly after noon.

Detective Inspector Munro said in a statement released on Tuesday: “We believe this is a contained incident with a man in custody.

“We are reviewing CCTV footage and speaking to a number of people in the area. However, we would urge anyone with any information to get in touch.”

“We understand how distressing and worrying this incident is and we will have additional officers in the area to reassure the community.”
