Police officer dies in line of duty in major A-road tragedy | UK | News
A police officer died on duty in an accident that occurred on the A12 motorway on Wednesday, November 19. Police currently believe no other vehicles were involved in the collision in Essex.
Essex Police said the officer was responding to an emergency on a motorbike at the time of the crash. He crashed on the road near Ingatestone at around 12.25pm and was pronounced dead at the scene.
As reported by Essex LivePart of the A12 was closed for a significant period of time while officers attended to the crash. An investigation has been launched but police believe the motorcycle was the only vehicle involved.
Chief Constable Ben-Julian Harrington said: “My thoughts and prayers are with the officer’s family and friends and all the Essex Police family. I would like to pay tribute to our professional and brave colleague.
“He was a dedicated professional who died doing his job protecting and serving the people of Essex. “I will always be grateful for his service.
“We support the officer’s colleagues and family at this extremely difficult time. I would ask that people do not speculate about the collision and the circumstances surrounding it. Please let our experienced and professional investigators carry out their work.”
“I would also like to thank members of the public affected by the collision for their patience, understanding and co-operation with the police officers and emergency services colleagues who responded to the collision.”
Other tributes have since poured in on the officer. Steve Martin, chairman of the Essex Police Federation, described the news as “heartbreaking”. He added that support would also be provided to other officers in the police.
He said: “This is heartbreaking news and the thoughts of all police officers at this time are with our colleague’s family, friends and close colleagues. Policing is a profession that faces risks every day and this incident is a harrowing example of the dangers we face on the job. If any officer needs assistance then they should contact the FA and we will support them to the best of our ability.”
Meanwhile, Essex Fire and Crime Commissioner Roger Hirst Police said the incident was “tragic and horrific”. He added: “We pay tribute to this officer who fulfilled his duty to ensure the safety and security of the people of Essex. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues.”
Other police forces from across the country, including South Wales Police, Avon and Somerset Police and Greater Manchester Police, also shared messages of love and support.
