Police seek footage of ‘blue SUV’ after newborn baby found outside fire station in ACT

Police are appealing to the public for help after a newborn baby was left at the front door of a fire station in Canberra.

The child, estimated to be one day old, was found outside the South Tuggeranong ACT Fire and Rescue Station in Conder on Thursday morning.

ACT Police have expressed concern for the baby’s mother and urged them to seek medical attention as soon as possible.

In an update, the police force said they were seeking dashcam footage of a blue SUV after receiving information from the public.

“Based on information provided by the public, police now believe a blue SUV type vehicle was at the fire station before 7.20am,” ACT Police said.

“Investigators are appealing for anyone with dashcam footage of the fire station at Tharwa Drive and Drakeford Drive between 5am and 7.30am on Thursday to come forward.”

On Thursday, ACT Fire and Rescue chief Chris White said staff found the newborn at the front door at approximately 7.20am on November 27 and was taken in on the advice of paramedics.

Detective Superintendent Alex Nicolson said the baby was taken to hospital “with no visible injuries”.

“It is estimated that the baby was born within the last 24 hours,” he said.

The police were notified shortly afterwards and our only concern is for the mother’s health and welfare.

I urge the mother to seek medical help. Please go to the hospital, call an ambulance or call the police.

“If you are a family friend or friend of this person who you think is a mother, please call them to seek medical help as soon as possible.”

Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers via the ACT website by calling 8228819. Information may be provided anonymously.
