POLL: Has Trump put enough pressure on Putin to end the war? | World | News

Donald Trump boasted he could end the crisis Russia-Ukraine war in the 24 hours before he became president of the United States for the second time. But 400 days after Mr. Trump’s inauguration, peace still seems a distant prospect as the brutal war enters its fifth year.

Embers The administration has brokered talks with delegations from Moscow and Kiev as part of a year-long effort to stop the fighting. But reconciling fundamental differences, such as the future of Russian-occupied Ukrainian territories and Ukraine’s post-war security, hindered progress.

Vladimir PutinBy offering concessions to Moscow while pressuring Kiev to accept a deal seen as favorable to Russia. Putin has voiced his support for Mr. Trump’s efforts but continues to stall and refuses to comply with the Kremlin’s demands. The Russian President’s stance pushed Mr. Trump to change his tune and renew U.S. arms shipments to Ukraine.

Speaking on the eve of the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenksy called on Mr. Trump to stand by his country.

Mr. Zelensky told CNN that he wanted assurances about what Ukraine’s allies would do if Russia invaded Ukraine again and a potential peace deal was broken by Vladimir Putin.

The Ukrainian leader also said that there are disagreements about the order of steps towards peace.

He said Mr. Trump wanted Kiev to sign a peace treaty with Moscow as well as an agreement with the United States and European allies giving security guarantees to Ukraine in a grand ceremony marking the end of the war.

But Mr. Zelensky first wants Congress to accept and fix the security guarantees to reassure Ukrainians that the allies can be trusted.

Russia also wants Ukraine to give up what is left of the country’s eastern Donetsk region. But Ukraine refuses to withdraw from the region and give up an important line in the country’s defense.

Meanwhile, thousands of soldiers from both sides died on the battlefield and Ukrainian civilians were battered by Russian attacks that led to years-long power outages.
