Popular high street giant with more than 130 UK stores announces shock closure | UK | News

A popular store that has been a fixture of a UK retail park for nearly five years is set to close permanently. Signs announcing the sale have closed have appeared in the window of shoe retailer Deichmann’s branch at Newbury Retail Park in Newbury, West Berkshire.
Deichmann, one of Europe’s largest shoe retailers, said the store will have sales until February 14. Newbury today reports. The move was described as “shameful” and someone else reportedly described the news as “sad” on social media. This week it was reported that the Davygate store in York was also showing signs of closure. York Blend reported.
A spokesperson for Deichmann UK told the outlet: “Unfortunately, we are in the process of closing our store in York. We continue to trade until 28 March 2026 and are considering suitable alternative locations in York.”
“Unfortunately we have colleagues who will be affected by the closure but the business is trying to avoid redundancies through redeployment wherever possible.”

Deichmann also closed its store on Sunday last week after 17 years in Newport Wales. The reason for the closures is not yet known.
Express.co.uk has contacted the company for information.
Accordingly scraper heroThe chain had 135 stores in the UK as of January 2025, the vast majority of which were in England.
The company, headquartered in Essen, Germany, started its operations as a single shoemaker’s shop in 1913.
But over the years, the wholly owned family business has grown into a major international brand and, as of April last year, operates in more than 30 countries. Deichmann sells its own branded products as well as a number of major brands.
