Portland police chief defends reforms amid anti-ICE protest criticism

Portland Police Chief Bob Day, after the city leaders ordered the police not to respond to the police, even when the federal agents faced violent iced protesters, he defended the reforms of his department and “crowded support” policies.

Last week, Portland ICE Office Director Cammila Wamsley said the facility was based on more than 100 flat nights and that the Portland police were not under the rule of the mayor and the Municipal Assembly.

“It is annoying for us to watch people who are attacked on the street and know that we don’t really have the authority to take steps unless there is a little connection to the federal law.” He said.

Every night, protests, bottle rockets that hit the ice building, rocks that break the windows, the eyes of the officers of the lasers and the tools that block the tools that prevent the changes and signs, he added.

In spite of these accounts, Day presented a very different picture in a piece of ideas published by Oregon on Sunday, and argued that Portland and his police drew a misleading and outdated picture.

Day said that Portlanders was constantly proud of how they came to each other, and that he was equally proud of the police department.

“Unfortunately, national portraits often disrupt the truth. Portland is 145 miles, but a city block has attracted great attention in news cycles. Viral clips – sometimes months or years old – draws a picture that is not consistent with the portland we see every day.” “Although this is annoying, we focus on what is important: to keep Portlanders safe.”

Day said that the department and its partners have reduced violence crimes by 17% and successfully facilitated numerous peaceful protests as part of the city’s free speech commitment.

Regarding the protests in the federal building, Day said that his officers had arrested and continued to prosecute.

“It is important to state that the federal protective service is guaranteed by the building, Portland police manages the surrounding neighborhoods,” he said. “Recently, we have seen that people who have changed perspectives with the intention of entering violence have come and we are investigating a few attacks; any kind of violence is unacceptable – we will continue to arrest and continue to prosecute. Free speech does not include freedom of crime.”

“There are also those who want to draw parallels about current events, and when they deeply affected 2020, more than 100 protest cities and Portland police. But for many reasons, not 2020.” “I have witnessed a significant change since I was a chef two years ago. Force, crowded management and reforms in the use of accountability reshaped how we work.

“As we have shown with many major protests this year, large demonstrations can emerge peacefully and take targeted actions that can quickly restore the order when the disorders arise.” “Five years ago, some cities and state leadership left the police office. Today has changed. The office, the mayor, the municipal council, the city manager, the governor, the congress delegation and the powerful leadership of Portlanders’ is a part of a united state -wide effort.”

Day also touched upon the plan of using Oregon national guards of the Trump administration to Portland with other federal law enforcement officers.

“One of the reasons for this action was that Portland police did not respond to public disorder.” “The tactical gears listed before the crowds do not mean that we do not respond because they do not see that they do not. In fact, research shows that such tactics often increase their crowded behavior.”

Instead, the department announced that it used an approach to supporting public order that started with civil servants interested in protest organizers before the demonstrations begin.

Day said that social assistance leads to meaningful conversations and stronger relationships in the community.

The next layer said it was a fast intervention team trained to manage the public order when criminal behavior took place. Some of the answers may include arrest.

Day, “our focus ‘crowded control’ social assistance, preparation and communication emphasizing ‘crowded support’ shifted.” He said. “Now we use evidence -based policing and crowded psychology to manage large public meetings. These innovations helped us to connect with new ways with communities, already paying dividends in more safe, more respectful shows.”

Day closed his experiment with an optimistic note and invited Portlanders to focus on civilian participation and community service.

“Instead of focusing on those who cannot be done, it is the opportunity to activate this energy through volunteering, community service or civilian participation.” “Turning mismatch into action is much more productive. Exhibiting our city on social media and other forms of communication tells the real story.

“Like any big city, our challenges are important and we address them,” his day. “Nevertheless, I believe it is Portland’s opportunity – not to be defined by the division, flexibility, unity and innovation.”

In recent weeks, iced protests, including Portland and Chicago, have continued nationwide.

On Saturday, the federal agents were multiplied and celebrated by 10 cars near Chicago, where icy crowds were gathered for days and about a dozen people were arrested.

At the beginning of this summer, President Donald Trump deployed national guard troops to Los Angeles in response to immigration sanction protests.
