Senior Russian Military Officer Dies In Car Bomb Explosion In Moscow | World News

Moscow: Russia’s Investigative Committee said that 56-year-old Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov died in hospital from injuries he received when an explosive placed under a vehicle exploded earlier in the day. Sarvarov served as head of the armed forces’ operational training department.

Investigators said one possible angle being examined was the involvement of Ukrainian intelligence agencies, although no evidence has been made public so far. Ukraine did not comment on the incident.

The explosion occurred in a parking area near an apartment block in the southern part of the Russian capital. Images taken from the scene showed a white car severely damaged, its doors blown off and debris scattered among nearby vehicles. According to the BBC, a criminal case was opened for murder and illegal use of explosives and forensic teams were dispatched to the region.

The Kremlin said President Vladimir Putin was informed of Sarvarov’s death shortly after the explosion. Presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed that the president had been informed about the incident.

Which High-Profile Attacks Have Shook Moscow Since the Ukrainian War Began?

Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, a series of high-profile attacks have targeted military officials and prominent figures in Moscow. In 2022, Darya Dugina, the daughter of a nationalist ideologue close to the Kremlin, was killed in a suspicious car bombing.

According to reports, General Yaroslav Moskalik lost his life in a car bomb attack last April, while General Igor Kirillov died in December 2024 as a result of the remote detonation of an explosive hidden in a scooter.

According to the Ukrainian source, Kirillov’s killing was carried out by the Ukrainian security service, but the claim was never officially confirmed. As a matter of policy, Kiev does not publicly acknowledge or claim responsibility for targeted attacks.
