A plane crashed near Louisville international airport in Kentucky, and local police officials reported an unknown number of injuries.
A UPS flight It took off from the airport and crashed around 5:15 p.m. local time, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
According to UPS, there were three crew members on board the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 aircraft. He was going to Honolulu.
A UPS spokesperson told the Guardian that the number of deaths and injuries has not been confirmed at this time and that the National Transportation Safety Board will lead the formal investigation moving forward.
Shortly after, a large smoke cloud was seen south of the airport. The Louisville metro police department said multiple agencies responded to reports of the crash.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear described the situation as “serious” in his post on Twitter/X and said he would go to Louisville.
“We are aware of a reported plane crash near Louisville International Airport, Kentucky. First responders are on scene and we will share more information as possible. Please pray for the pilots, crew, and anyone affected. We will share more soon,” he wrote in another post.
“This is an active scene with fire and debris,” LMPD said in a statement. “Stay away.”
Videos posted on social media show an active fire.
A shelter-in-place order was issued for all locations within 5 miles of the closed airport. The order was later expanded to “all areas north of the airport to the Ohio River” to include most of the city.
“Please avoid the area until further notice,” LMPD added.
