Premier Jactina Allan calls on toll road companies to make roads free this summer

After Victoria Premier Jacinta Allan announced that public transport would be free at the weekend during the opening of the Metro Tunnel, she asked the companies operating the state’s toll roads to make these roads free during the summer holidays.

The move aims to expand the government’s free travel initiatives but relies on the cooperation of private toll operators such as Linkt and ConnectEast.

The request follows his announcement on Wednesday of free transportation on weekends for two months this summer, Allan said in a letter shared on social media.

“This means free travel on every train, every bus, every weekend – everywhere – from the opening of the Metro Tunnel in early December until February 1, 2026,” says the letter sent to toll companies Linkt and ConnectEast.

“In the spirit of our blessing of free public transportation throughout the summer, I ask you to join us.

“Victorians would be delighted if you offered them some savings over the summer when CityLink, EastLink and the new West Gate Tunnel open.”

The Prime Minister will speak to journalists at the West Gate Tunnel in Footscray on Thursday morning, alongside Transport Minister Gabrielle Williams.

The press conference came a day after CFMEU workers walked off work at the West Gate Tunnel and other sites in Victoria due to a dispute with a developer in South Australia.

Sources confirmed that workers stopped work on the $10.1 billion project on Tuesday, citing safety concerns as the reason for the halt.
