President Donald Trump said Thursday that the United States should consider testing NATO by forcing member countries to respond to America’s southern border crisis.

Trump suggested in a post on Truth Social that the United States could “put NATO to the test” by invoking Article 5, the alliance’s collective defense clause that makes an attack on one member an attack on all members.

“Perhaps we should have put NATO to the test: invoke Article 5 and force NATO to come here and protect our Southern Border from further invasion by Illegal Immigrants, thus freeing up large numbers of Border Patrol Agents for other duties,” he wrote.

The president’s comments come after he recently questioned NATO’s commitment to assisting the United States

“We will always be with NATO, even if they are not with us,” the president wrote on social media earlier this month.

Trump announced that he has “the framework for a future agreement on Greenland” after meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland on Wednesday.

Trump wrote on Truth Social that if the agreement were to be finalized, “it would be a great deal for the United States and all NATO countries.”

After the meeting, Trump said he would cancel the president’s plan to impose tariffs on a group of NATO members sending troops to Greenland as part of efforts to capture the island. Trump claimed that these countries would impose a 10 percent customs duty on all goods as of February 1.

In an exclusive interview with Fox News this week, Rutte said Trump was “completely right” about the need to increase security in the Arctic region, adding that the possibility of Russia or China becoming a threat in the region is increasing.

Rutte praised Trump’s leadership in getting NATO countries to pay more for the alliance’s defense.

“Tonight I will discuss with you about this program, it was he who brought the whole of Europe and Canada to this famous 5%, which is very important for us to equalize our spending and also to protect ourselves. And this is the framework that you see in his post and on which we will work,” Rutte said.

NATO members previously spent 2 percent of GDP on defense, but have now agreed to spend 5 percent of GDP on defense and national security infrastructure.
