Controversy broke out in New Delhi over Taliban Acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi’s press conference over which Indian women journalists were allegedly banned from attending the Afghanistan Embassy.

Congress MP Karti P Chidambaram further criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government on the issue and expressed disappointment with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.

“I understand the geopolitical imperatives that compel us to engage with the Taliban, but bowing to their discriminatory and simply primitive traditions is downright ridiculous; it is very disappointing to note the behavior of the Ministry of External Affairs and S Jaishankar in excluding women journalists from the Taliban Minister’s press briefing,” he said. The criticism came after no female reporters were seen at a press conference held by Afghan Foreign Minister Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaki on Thursday. The Taliban minister is on a week-long visit to India from October 9 to October 16. This is the first high-level delegation from Kabul to India since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in August 2021.

On the first day of his visit, Muttaqi held a bilateral meeting with EAM S Jaishankar and discussed cooperation efforts to strengthen ties between the two countries.

India has also announced several new projects for Afghanistan as part of its ongoing health cooperation. The project includes establishing a Thalassemia center and a modern diagnostic center in Kabul, as well as replacing the heating system of the Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health (IGICH).

India will also build a 30-bed hospital in Kabul’s Bagrami district, an Oncology Center and Trauma Center in Kabul, as well as five Maternity Health Clinics in Pktika, Khost and Paktia provinces. (
