Pressure on Meghalaya council to prepare tribal-only poll rolls

GUWAHATI

Many pressure groups have petitioned the chairman of a tribal council in Meghalaya to amend existing laws and create a separate voters’ list for council elections to exclude non-tribal voters.

Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections scheduled to be held on April 10. Violence related to nominations submitted by non-tribal candidatesmostly Bengali-speaking Muslims. In March, two people lost their lives after police opened fire on gangs carrying out attacks in Chibinang district in the West Garo Hills region of the state.
