Tennessee school board member censured for telling student, ‘You’re hot’

A school board member in Tennessee was reprimanded last week for telling a high school student she was “hot” at a public board meeting.

During April 2 live broadcast “God, you’re so hot,” Washington County Board of Education member Keith Ervin told a female student at the meeting.

The board in Northeast Tennessee passed the censure during an emergency meeting Wednesday following calls for the removal of Ervin and Superintendent Jerry Boyd.

The student representative to the board had just finished learning about career and technical education when Ervin gave him a side hug and made the following statement, NBC News reported.

“God, you’re so hot. You know that? Damn. Where do you go to school?” he said as the meeting continued.

Ervin defended his remarks Wednesday, saying his “hot” comment was taken out of context.

“Of course I saw the clip. Look, I understand, if that’s all you see, I understand why people reacted that way,” he said. “But that’s not the whole conversation, not even close. At the board meeting last week, I wanted to congratulate a student who did a great job sharing his thoughts with everyone in the room.

“When I mentioned she was hot, I meant she was in good shape. It had nothing to do with her looks. As a lifelong supporter of David Crockett High School, I was particularly surprised to learn that’s where she attended the school.”

He also added that the clip of his comments that went viral was just a few seconds from the two-hour meeting, and that the full video would provide full context.

“There was no disrespect intended, and I apologize to him and his family for my comment that brought public backlash to the incredible job he did as a student body member,” Ervin said.

He apologized He said her words “overshadowed a shining moment for one of our students.”

NBC News reported that as Ervin finished, a man said, “I watched; you’re a liar!” He reported that he shouted.

Concluding his speech, Ervin said, “I want people to take a look before jumping to conclusions. The video says it all.”
