Donald Trump threatened on Friday to require US voters to show photo identification before being allowed to vote in the upcoming midterm elections.
Trump has emphasized that he will push for change even if Congress fails to pass the Save America Act, which cleared the House earlier this week but faces an uphill battle in the Senate. In addition to imposing a national photo ID requirement to vote, the bill would require proof of citizenship for registration and greatly limit voting by mail.
“There will be Voter ID for the Midterm Elections, whether approved by Congress or not!” Trump shared in one of a series of letters sent after speaking to troops at Fort Bragg aboard Air Force One Friday afternoon.

“I hope the Supreme Court, in ‘rigorously’ examining such a simple issue as Sovereign Savings Tariffs, realizes that these Corrupt and Unstable Democrats, if they come to power, will not only add two States with all their baggage to our list of 50, but they will PACK THE COURT,” the President said.
Trump has long claimed that systemic voter fraud contributed to his loss of the 2020 presidential election, but there is no evidence to support this claim.
Trump signed an executive order last year that required proof of citizenship to register to vote and prevented states from accepting mail-in ballots received after Election Day, even if they were mailed before that date. A federal judge blocked the citizenship requirement in October, saying the president “does not have the authority to direct such changes.”
