Prince Harry and Meghan Markle call on parents to challenge social media firms

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have called on parents to challenge social media companies, accusing them of exploiting children through manipulative algorithms.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have also expressed alarm over the “unregulated AI boom”, highlighting their belief that the technology’s advantages are inherently linked to its risks. They cited the ParentsTogether study, in which researchers posing as children encountered harmful interactions with an AI chatbot every five minutes.

“This was not content created by a third party. These were companies’ own chatbots working to advance their own immoral internal policies,” Prince Harry said as he and Markle were named Humanitarians of the Year by the nonprofit Project Healthy Minds at Spring Studios in Manhattan on Thursday night. “But here’s what gives us hope: these families are not facing this alone.”

The couple also announced Thursday that their foundation, Parents Network, will join forces with ParentsTogether to build the movement of families fighting for online safety.

The remarks came at the annual gala for Project Healthy Minds, a millennial- and Gen-Z-focused nonprofit technology organization that operates a free online marketplace aimed at connecting patients with exactly the mental health care they’re looking for.

The couple have made young people’s mental health a cornerstone of their philanthropic work since establishing the Archewell Foundation in 2020 after stepping down as working royals. The nonprofit works to make digital spaces safer through its network of families who have been harmed online and the support of youth-led organizations shaping responsible technology.

Prince Harry has previously stressed that powerful social media companies must be held accountable. Last year he warned that young people were experiencing an “epidemic” of anxiety, depression and social isolation resulting from negative experiences online.

According to numerous studies, there are few safety measures in place to reduce children’s exposure to age-inappropriate content such as pornography and violence on social media; In this case, children also face cyberbullying and sexual harassment.

The issue can also be considered personally for the couple. Markle openly expressed the mental health problems she experienced due to what she described as intense pressure from the royal family and tabloid attacks. Harry’s personal life has been the subject of many tabloid stories, including targeted phone hacking and surveillance.

Prince Harry took his awareness campaign to a reception hosted by men’s health nonprofit Movember on Wednesday night. In his conversation with television reporter Brooke Baldwin, he emphasized that men should not feel alone because he hears the same struggles over and over again when talking to them.

“The biggest obstacle is the belief that no one will understand,” he said in comments reshared on his blog. “Loneliness makes you believe you are the only one, which is rarely true.”

According to Project Healthy Minds CEO Phil Schermer, “culture creators” like Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are important voices in mental health conversations because they inspire large audiences to seek care.

But Schermer emphasized that “the moment of inspiration is temporary” and that it’s important for celebrities to take the extra step by partnering with trusted organizations that can actually provide care.

He cited the premiere’s host, NBC television personality Carson Daly, as an example. Daly described his own anxiety on air after reading a 2018 article about NBA champion Kevin Love’s in-game panic attack.

Daly, a Project Healthy Minds board member, said mental health is now the topic that comes up most often when fans get to know her in public.

“I said, ‘I want to put all my eggs in this basket,’ because even in telling my story, I see the power; it enables a lot of other people to tell theirs,” Daly told the Associated Press. “And I think that’s how this process, destigmatization, works.”

The money raised Thursday night will help the nonprofit create new filters that break down insurance providers’ care options and preferences for in-person or telehealth care options, Schermer said. He compared the features to those on travel planning sites like Expedia, which allow users to choose flight times, prices and airlines.

Having a recognizable host in Daly also helps “make it cooler to talk about your feelings,” Schermer said.

“It’s not just the absence of stigma,” Schermer said. “It’s also the sense of pride that being vulnerable, being honest, being open is actually your greatest superpower.”

Thursday night’s other honoree was Kalen Jackson, co-owner and chief brand officer of the Indianapolis Colts. The NFL executive, who has spoken openly about dealing with anxiety, has maintained his staunch support for the team’s mental health after the death of his father and beloved former owner Jim Irsay.

Project Healthy Minds recognized Jackson with the Sports Visionary of the Year Award, first presented by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. Jackson leads her family’s Kicking The Stigma initiative, which raises awareness about mental health disorders and works to expand access to care in Indiana and across the country.
