Meanwhile, Alahmed was shot twice by the second gunman positioned on a nearby bridge.
It is believed he suffered gunshot wounds to his shoulder and hand and will undergo surgery on Sunday night.
Ahmed’s cousin, Mustafa, spoke to 7NEWS outside the hospital and confirmed that Ahmed had no experience with weapons and only decided to intervene to help the situation.
“We don’t know exactly what’s going on in the hospital and inside,” Mustafa said.
“We hope he’ll be okay. He’s 100 percent a hero.”
Ahmed became an instant hero after incredible footage captured at the scene showed him swerving around a car and grabbing the shooter from behind.
Ahmed can then be seen grappling with the shooter and pointing his rifle at the attacker as he retreats.
“There is no doubt that there are many people alive tonight because of his bravery,” NSW Premier Chris Minns said.
