Phased Plan Unveiled; ADB To Fund Rs 7,055-Crore First Phase

Hyderabad: The government plans to execute the Musi rejuvenation project covering 55 km of the river in Hyderabad in five phases

Officials said technical and financial discussions have been completed with the Asian Development Bank for Phase-1 financing, estimated to be around Rs 7.055 billion.

The ministers instructed the officials to start initial construction activity in a 5 km stretch within the 21 km wider stretch between Himayatsagar and Osmansagar and Bapughat, which would have minimal impact on the public.

Officials are reviewing plans for the 55-kilometre east-west corridor from Narsingi to Gowrelli.

Preparations for the detailed project report for the expansion from Uppal Bhagath to Gowrelli are ongoing.

During the discussions at the ministerial meeting, land acquisition from the defense ministry for the Gandhi Sarovar project and progress regarding the Mir Alam Tank were discussed.

Ministers are examining rubber dam models based on ‘Obermeyer Spillway Technology’.

The dams planned at multiple points are expected to support water storage, boating and water sports activities.

Officials have been told to examine similar projects in Nashik and Mumbai and submit a report.

Musi Project Will Start in August; Government Aims to Complete 2027 with “Fair” Resettlement

Hyderabad: The government said work on the Musi River rejuvenation project will begin in August and be finished in December 2027. Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka assured that support to residents facing displacement will be provided legally and fairly.

He was addressing a meeting of the Cabinet sub-committee, which he chairs and also comprises ministers Duddilla Sridhar Babu and Ponnam Prabhakar. Representatives of Madhu Park Ridge (B-Block) Housing Society participated in discussions focusing on project timelines, financing, public concerns and construction plans.

Bhatti told residents that the government has a “very positive” outlook towards the residents of Madhu Park Ridge B-Block. He said the project aims to improve living conditions in the city. “The government’s aim is to provide clean air, water and greenery to city residents,” he said, while asking citizens to cooperate with the project.

Association representatives conveyed their concerns and demands to the ministers. The government said residents responded positively after officials clarified their doubts about the project.

The committee said the Musi rejuvenation exercise was “not just a river cleaning exercise but also a broader social responsibility”. It was stated that the project would proceed with public participation and development should involve people as stakeholders rather than displacing them without consultation.

Authorities were instructed to minimize the impact on homes and private property. The committee also recommended changes to alignments where possible to reduce the impact on existing structures.

Bhatti instructed officials to obtain all environmental clearances before construction begins. He asked the directorates to announce the project throughout the city through hoardings, bus stops, main roads and cinema screenings. Special committees will coordinate approvals, funding, and departmental efforts.
