Londoners couldn’t believe their eyes when they spotted the Prince and Princess of Wales quietly strolling through Borough Market and Bermondsey Beer Mile on Thursday. The couple visited the fresh food market and dozens of craft breweries and pubs as part of a series of events highlighting how the River Thames remains the heart of London life.

They visited some of the most iconic stalls in Borough Market, including exponentially growing London dessert business Humble Crumble. Excited people formed a circle around the couple walking around the market and recorded every second of the interaction on their phones.

If city workers, tourists or locals had missed William and Catherine at London’s oldest food market, there was a chance they might bump into them at Southwark Brewing Company or Fabal Beerhall, or even on a boat as they cruised upriver towards RNL’s Tower Lifeboat Station.

The two engagements in the heart of the city were not announced in advance by Kensington Palace and, as usual, were not even revealed to royal correspondents. This is because the team is concerned about security and crowd control in case the visit becomes widely known. There were no security barriers in Borough Market, and William and Catherine were unimpressed by the dozens of people who gathered around them, stopping to say hello and pose for selfies. It’s a reminder of the future king and queen’s enduring appeal to the public and their new realistic approach to royal engagements.

The couple are keen to project an air of normalcy and relatability that other older, more traditional royals may not enjoy. Eager to understand the steps to making a cappuccino, Catherine immediately got to work on the coffee maker. Soon they were both happy to offer some cake and pudding to unsuspecting customers.

Visits like this will help repair the monarchy in its time of need and project an image of stability, results and, above all, fun, just when they need it most.

Commonwealth Day focus

As the King and the Royal Family sought to celebrate the Commonwealth on Monday, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s dark shadow continued to loom over the Firm.

They arrived at Westminster Abbey to a backdrop of noisy anti-monarchy protesters chanting across the street. The group of flag-waving Republicans asked the question: “What did you know?” They held banners with photographs of the King’s disgraced brother. The noise was largely drowned out by the Abbey bells and musicians, but there was no escaping the bright yellow banners and flags a few meters away.

Seeing senior royals walk past monarchy opponents asking questions about the Andrew scandal was a stark reminder of the crisis affecting the crown.

The police investigation continues as the King attempts to distance himself from his brother by stripping him of his titles, exiling him to the private Sandringham Estate and publishing carefully worded statements.

But the King tried to keep a firm focus on celebrating today’s family of nations rather than the problems facing his own family. The public meeting of the King, Queen and the Prince and Princess of Wales since Andrew’s arrest last month was a significant moment for the Firm.

There’s no doubt that the demonstration of unity has reached a crucial point, but the prevalence of protesters proves that the questions surrounding the former Duke of York are not going away any time soon.

Queen’s speech

The Queen gave a particularly powerful speech last week sending a message of support to victims of sexual violence. He told them: “Today and every day, we stand with you and with you in solidarity, sorrow and sympathy.”

Camilla has been itching to make such a public statement for some time, following the release of the Epstein files in January. And his speech on International Women’s Day appears to have been seen as the perfect time to do so, as it came after the initial uproar and when the excitement in the Palace had faded sufficiently.

Let us not forget that Her Majesty has long campaigned on violence against women and girls, visiting women’s shelters and challenging taboos around talking about domestic violence. Therefore, this topic and his words are not out of place. He didn’t directly reference the late sex offender or his brother-in-law, but there’s no escaping the real meaning behind his speech.

Entertainment in Cheltenham

Racing fans headed to Gloucestershire last week to enjoy everything the Cheltenham Festival has to offer. Members of the Royal Family, including Zara and Mike Tindall, the Princess Crown and the Queen, also enjoyed the action.

But one person who was most welcome was Carole Middleton, mother of the Princess of Wales. He was photographed walking arm in arm with Zara, wearing his daughter’s feathered fedora, and laughing as he watched the races from the royal box. This proves that Carole is a firm part of the royal inner circle and is clearly comfortable around the Firm.
