Having recently discovered Prince Louis’ love and obsession with horse chestnuts, the World Conker Championship wrote to the Prince and Princess of Wales, offering Louis his first official role as their honorary patron, but this was politely declined by Louis’ parents.
A Kensington Palace spokesman said Prince William and Princess Kate rejected the offer because Louis was not yet a working member of the Royal Family. Telegram: “We really appreciate your invitation, but Prince Louis is currently ‘conkertrat’ on his studies.”
Kate shared Louis’ love for horse chestnuts during his engagement to the Boy Scouts and First Lady Melania Trump in Windsor last month. Princess, co-president of the scouts, said to the chief scout: “We continue to find horse chestnuts in the closets and on the bed; There are horse chestnuts everywhere!”
The World Conker Championship has raised £420,000 for charities supporting the visually impaired since 1965.
The competition is held annually in Northamptonshire on the second Sunday in October, with participants competing for the Conker ‘King and Queen’ titles.
Mags Blake and Matt Cross were officially crowned as this year’s winners of the competition on October 12.
The first record of the game was taken from the Isle of Wight in 1848.
Conkers are the shiny brown seeds of the horse chestnut tree. They grow in green spiny pods that fall to the ground in autumn, and the pods often shatter on impact to reveal the shiny horse chestnuts inside.
