Legendary Hindi film industry actor Dharmendra passed away on November 24 at the age of 89. Having worked on over 300 films, the man is revered across generations and has left a legacy for new and future generations of actors. He has acted in over 40 films with his wife and on-screen jodi, 70s actress Hema Malini, who is extremely famous. In her autobiography Hema Malini: Beyond Dream Girl, Hema Malini talked about her management and why she refused to work under him.
Why did Dharmendra refuse to work under Hema Malini?
Hema Malini had directed many films but he announced that he wanted to cast her in his first film. Even after he offered her a ‘significant role’ in his movie, which she seriously wanted him to act in, she said she was ‘not willing to act’ under his direction. What made matters worse for Hema was Dharmendra’s disappearance during the film’s muhurat, which started the rumors. However, the actor put an end to the rumors and gossips by attending the audio launch and premiere of the film.
Hema Malini also revealed in her autobiography that the actress was in the USA at that time and hence could not attend the mahurat. However, he also revealed that Dharmendra supported the film from beginning to end. Hema said, “I wanted Dharam-ji to play an important role in my film, but he was not willing to act under my direction. People said all kinds of things after the film’s mahurat that Dharam-ji could not attend the party. But there was no truth in it. He could not attend as he was in America. Every day, I would update him about the progress of the film. He was a great support. My daughters were also particularly excited for this film.”
Hema Malini made her directorial debut in 1992 with Dil Aashna Hai, which also starred Shah Rukh Khan. The movie featured Shah Rukh Khan, who was just starting to rise in the industry. Dharmendra was known for his strong acting skills and handsome looks as he was a passionate actor. He died on December 8, 14 days shy of his 90th birthday. Dharmendra is survived by his first wife, Prakash Kaur; his second wife, actress Hema Malini; and his six children, including sons Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol from his first marriage and daughters Vijeta and Ajeita, as well as daughters Esha Deol and Ahana Deol from his second marriage.
Dharmendra married his first wife, Prakash Kaur, in 1954, when he was 19, and had four children with her; sons Sunny and Bobby Deol, both actors, and daughters Vijeta and Ajieta.
