Pro-Iran militias in Iraq claim attacks on US targets

As the war in Iran enters its sixth day and hostilities spread across the Middle East, pro-Iran militias in Iraq have claimed responsibility for a wave of attacks on “enemy targets” in the country.

The Islamic State group said Thursday it carried out 29 attacks in 24 hours.

Extremists said dozens of drones and missiles were used in the attacks, but the exact locations of the attacks were not specified.

He also warned that any countries supporting military operations against Iran would be considered “legitimate targets.”

“The criminal American-Zionist enemy continues to mobilize its allies against the Islamic Republic of Iran and free people in the region,” the statement said.

The group also claimed to have shot down a drone, which it described as an “American invasion”.

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella group of armed groups allied with Iran, has repeatedly claimed attacks against US military installations and other targets in Iraq and neighboring countries.

Iraq has a 1500 kilometer border with Iran. Tehran has significant political, economic and military influence in the neighboring country, including powerful militias loyal to Iran.

Some of the Shiite community in Iraq fear that the weakening of Iran will reduce their political influence in Iraq.

Some observers warn that developments in neighboring Iran could trigger new unrest in Iraq.
