‘Probably the worst Australian team since…’: Stuart Broad makes bold claim as Ashes rivalry heats up

Former Australian opener David Warner started the pre-Ashes banter this week, declaring that Australia’s aim was to win the series, while England would only seek a ‘moral victory’ with their much-hyped Bazball style of play.
Confident in his prediction, Warner tipped Australia to win the series 4-0 and pointed out that weather conditions could force a draw in a match. But he conceded England could get even a single Test – but only if Australian skipper Pat Cummins is sidelined through injury.
England’s experienced player Stuart Broad He came up with a fitting response, further fueling the rivalry by claiming Australia’s current squad was the ‘weakest team to wear the Baggy Green’ since the 2010-11 Ashes series.
“It’s probably the worst Australian team since 2010 when England last won and the best England team since 2010,” Broad told the BBC podcast. “Actually, it’s not an opinion, it’s reality. So those things match the fact that it’s going to be a great Ashes series.” Broad’s comment angered the Australians as the 2010-11 series was the last time Australia lost an Ashes series at home. Australia have maintained a formidable home record since reclaiming the jar in England in 1989: 13 wins, two draws and no defeats in Test matches.
The Australians have held the Ashes since 2017, successfully defending the jar with home wins and a series of draws in England.
The upcoming 2025-26 five-Test series will kick off in Perth, Western Australia, on November 21, reigniting one of cricket’s fiercest rivalries.
