A tense proposal on a high Michigan suspension bridge took a dramatic turn when an engagement ring slipped through a man’s fingers and fell into the snow 100 feet below.

Trevor Van Camp had proposed to his longtime girlfriend, Danielle Jenkins, under the Christmas lights at the SkyBridge in Northern Michigan’s Boyne Mountain, when he dropped the ring through the grate while getting down on one knee.

“When I went to take the ring out of the box, mind you, I jerked, looked down, like it wasn’t a good idea, and yeah, I dropped the ring,” Van Camp said.

The couple panicked for a moment and said they knew they had to try to find the ring.

The couple got permission from the resort to descend the snowy mountain and spent two and a half hours searching with metal detectors along with Pat Harper, the resort’s night shift snowmaking supervisor.

Harper said the metal detector went off as the couple was preparing to call off the search around 10 p.m. After using his hand to move some snow and dirt, he discovered the tip of a ring sticking out of the ground.

“I sat there for about a minute and thought, ‘There’s no way we’re going to find this,'” he said.

The couple was delighted that Harper found the ring.

“Big props and kudos to Pat for doing this for us, because he saved the day, he really did,” Jenkins said. “It was an experience we have now, a story we will tell about our engagement.”

Now with the ring on Jenkins’ finger and a fun story to tell, the couple said they would return to the resort to complete their hike on the SkyBridge.

“We will probably return in the winter to complete our journey with the lights on the bridge and enjoy the experience we interrupted to find my ring,” Jenkins said.
