Area of England well protected for nature is in decline, data shows | Conservation

Since the experts say that the government allows the degradation of habitats, the country’s largest wildlife organizations, according to the data obtained from the coalition, Britain’s effectively protected area for nature continues to decrease.

Until 2030, the government is under legal obligation to protect 30% of the land in England and the sea for nature in the UK. However, 2.83% of the UK is currently protected for nature, 2.4% of Wales, 4% of Northern Ireland and 12.6% of Scotland. This gives an average of 6% of England as a whole, which is far below the target.

According to the analysis of wildlife and rural connection, Britain’s effectively protected area for nature fell from 2.93% in 2024. The Help Coalition looked at legally protected areas such as special scientific interests (SSSIS) and analyzed whether they were in good condition.

The last report says: “We can be sure that only 2.83% of the land of England are effectively protected and managed well for nature. This decreased from 2.93% in 2024 and 3.11% in 2023.

“This decrease is the result of a deterioration in the reported situation of some CNSIS.

This may be further reduced compared to natural groups that have strongly criticizing the ministers of the working ministers for the planning and infrastructure invoice that robbed the natural areas of legal guards previously protected under EU laws. Guardian analysis has recently found that 5,000 natural areas have been at risk under the proposed law, which led to through the parliament.

Experts who write the report say that the government’s newly protected areas are very slow and many areas of existing areas are still damaged or broken as a result of insufficient or inappropriate management, they cannot protect nature in various ways. They also say that ministers generally do not have the data they need to monitor biological diversity or plan to heal.

There are also problems with the protection of ocean habitats. Although 38% of the UK waters are determined as marine protection areas (MPAs), many of them are subjected to damaging activities such as lower trolls, open marine energy development, pollution, scanning and cable flooring. David Attenborough drew attention to the fact that the trawl was made at the beginning of the year with a film showing that the devastating practice that deleted all the sea bed life took place in preserved areas.

Richard Benwell, General Manager of Wildlife and Rural Link, said: “It is only five years, the UK is at risk of kidnapping the target of nature in a country’s miles. It is not a luxury to protect 30% of the land and the sea. It is very important to stop the fall of wildlife and to secure the natural foundations of our health and economy.

“The goal is still available, but only if the ministers show real political will. The rapid release of newly protected sites can make this ambition a reality by taking care of nature in our national parks and landscapes.”

A Defra spokesman: “Nature is not a luxury, but as a pride of life itself and as a proud country of nature lovers, the government is determined to change its decline after years of negligence.
