Norris’s situation reminds me of the situation that encountered Lewis Hamilton while trying to save a gap to Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg in 2016.
Hamilton was behind Rosberg in the championship as a result of a series of reliability problems. In Malaysia, with a dominant victory towards the end of the year, it was prepared to reclaim the leadership only to fail its engine.
This had to close Rosberg in the last five races of Hamilton.
The Germans entered a strong position in Japan the next weekend and Hamilton won the last four races in a row.
Wolff said on Sunday, Malaysia retirement has created strains in her relationship with Hamilton.
