A public congress in Birbhum of Western Bengal in the Siuri region opposed the Deocha Pachami Coal Mining Project. Natives, activists and politicians who participated in the mass contract on Friday, September 19, 2025, claimed that illegal land acquisition and adivasi families were displaced without fair compensation in the project.

Economist, activist politician Prasengit Bose, Senior Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdury, directed the congress with local activists.

“Thousands of Adivasi, Dalit and minority families live for fear of relocation. Local activists also said that this mining project will create a long -term water crisis in the region, which is already added to the already ongoing air and water pollution in the region due to mining work.

The activists and politicians in the contract asked for a judicial investigation for the entire project for corruption and asked for the immediate stop.

According to many experts, the minimization coal reserves in Deocha-Pachami were estimated to be 1200 million tons, but the coal layer was buried under a basalt layer of 90 to 245 meters.

In February, Prime Minister Mamata announced that the project would provide coal supply for a hundred years and produce a lakh business at the Bannerje Bangal Business Summit. However, many politicians, including the opposition leader, claimed that it was impossible to extract coal under such thick basalt layers.

“The government’s allegations are misleading. What is on the ground is not coal extraction, but in the stages pushed without suitable gaps,” he said.

The beginning of the project natives has been concerned that the soil will be captured or that India will be re -positioned for what is launched as the largest coal block. Natives and activists organized many protests condemning the mining project.

However, the government officials claimed that there was a job per Lakh and a job per family for anyone who surrendered their territory for the project. However, many on the ground said that there was a lack of transparency by leaving their future uncertain during the compensation process.
