Thieves explode ATM at Melbourne’s Queen Victoria Market

Police have arrested a man after an explosive device went off at an ATM in Queen Victoria Market.

While one person was being treated in hospital under police supervision, a police spokesman said that two more people escaped from the scene after the arson and theft incidents.

ATMs in inner Melbourne markets were targeted in the early hours of Wednesday.

“Three men used explosives to gain access to an ATM on Victoria Street at around 2.45am,” a police spokesman said.

“The trio fled the scene on foot. A man was located on Peel St a short time later.

“He was taken to hospital under police guard and his statement will be taken.”

Police are appealing for anyone with dashcam or CCTV footage to come forward.

The historic markets are just a few blocks north of Melbourne’s CBD, and much of the area is walkable after hours.
