Trump’s brutal calls for US to take Greenland ‘we have to have it’ | World | News

President Donald Trump is doubling down on efforts to buy Greenland, the huge island controlled by Denmark, saying the United States needs it for national security reasons. During the announcement to build a new “Gold Fleet” of “Trump-class” warships, Trump told reporters: “You look up and down the coast, there are Russian and Chinese ships everywhere. We need it for national security. We have to have it,” USA Today reported.

Trump’s interest in Greenland comes shortly after he appointed Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry as U.S. special envoy to the Arctic island. The president signaled that he chose Landry for the role because he was a “deal-making type of guy.”

Denmark, which had resisted Trump’s previous attempts to take the island, summoned its US ambassador in response to Landry’s appointment. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen told TV2: “Suddenly we have a special US presidential representative who, in his opinion, is tasked with seizing Greenland. This is of course completely unacceptable.”

Trump rejects Danish claims and emphasizes US interest in Greenland

At the press conference, Trump rejected Denmark’s claims about Greenland, saying, “Denmark didn’t spend any money there, they don’t have military protection. They say Denmark was there 300 years ago or something. They were there by boat or something. I’m sure we were there by boats, too.”

Greenland, a former Danish colony with a population of about 57,000, has the right to declare independence under a 2009 agreement but remains heavily dependent on fishing and Danish subsidies. Its strategic location between Europe and North America makes it a key site for the US ballistic missile defense system, while its mineral wealth has increased US interest in reducing its dependence on Chinese exports.

Greenland Prime Minister defends island’s right to self-determination

In response to Landry’s appointment, Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen issued a statement emphasizing that the island will decide its own future.

Trump also explained that the USA was not interested in Greenland because of its mineral wealth, saying, “We have so many fields for mines, oil and other things, we have more oil than any country in the world. We will have to handle all of these.”

As tensions rise between the USA and Denmark over the future of Greenland, the world is eagerly waiting to see how this geopolitical struggle will develop.
