Racing legend Allan Moffat dies, aged 86

“Allan Moffat was one of the best we will ever see. He will be sorely missed.”

Moffat, Bathurst champion in 1970, 1971, 1973 and 1977, was the face of Ford in Australia for almost a decade while competing with Brock at the mountain.

Four-time Bathurst champion Allan Moffat has died aged 86.

He is also one of only three drivers to have won pole position at the mountain in three consecutive years.

Moffat also won Sandown six times as part of his 32 race victories in the Touring Car Championship and tasted success with a Mazda later in his career.

Born in Canada, Moffat moved to Australia at the age of 17. He had been battling Alzheimer’s disease since he was diagnosed in 2019.

“Australia lost one of its sporting legends today with the passing of Allan Moffat OBE,” his family said in a statement.

“Allan Moffat was not only one of Australia’s most successful and admired motor racing drivers, he was also a major figure whose influence shaped the country’s motorsport identity for more than five decades.

“Respected for his skill, determination and outstanding professionalism, Moffat’s legacy is etched in Australian sporting history.”
