Melbourne’s first new train station in 40 years is finished – with two key new pieces of tech

The station is to reflect the architecture of the town hall. However, the second imperial style porticos and columns are difficult to define. The entrance goes down to a concrete box with five long escalator stairs, where architects cheerfully baptized the “Crypt”.

You won’t need a Myki to go down to Crypt – the area is deliberately open to the public. There is a coffee shop and a large screen for the retail and the location to reach the wall. Walshe, you can keep public activities here.

On the platforms, boring machines were three -side cylinders from the mainland, and the current city cycle created supreme open platforms rather than claustrophobic tunnel stations. 18 meters wide, among the world’s largest metro platforms. The total area excavated for the station is more than a city block length and more than a five -storey construction depth.

When vaulted ceilings and necklace lights are installed, the platform has a slight cathedral atmosphere. Its wide dimensions – built for trains of 10 vehicles that will ultimately be needed in the future – it also contributes to this feeling.

There are two important technology parts here. First, it is a high -capacity signal that connects trains wirelessly, allows them to automatically adjust their speeds and protect their distance – similar to radar cruise control in a car. Automatic control means that trains can work much closer to each other and allow faster service to which we witness.

Secondly, the new platform screen doors. When closed, they completely cover the platform before they open in compatible with the train doors. “You don’t have the gush of hot wind while cooking here, B says Walshe. And people and phones should lead to a more reliable service as they no longer fall on rails. In addition, they help stations to remain fixed thermal, heating or cooling is not required.

Navigation is built in the design, launching “shark fins” from the roof. One side pink, to symbolize walking towards the exit, the other is gray as it walks towards the platform.

The designers were inspired by Melbourne’s sunset and sunset, and painted with a white, pink, yellow and orange palette. “Sunrise and sunset are timeless, Wal says Walshe.

Although each station is a “made -ordered annex, there is very little significant personality that appears almost the same on the station on the station. Passengers will have to pay attention to make sure they don’t go down to the wrong. This is not the Moscow Metro, its theme and detailed decoration.

We finish our tour at Campbell Arcade, the Pink 1950s -term underground shopping strip of the 1950s, which will be used to connect Town Hall and Flinders Street stations. The builders working with Victoria inheritors added granite columns and small tiles and even gave a sense of age to the new section.

As Finders leaves the gates of the street station, a young woman tries to enter, but she refuses to accept the confirmatory ticket. Orum I don’t know what happened, I literally finished it yesterday, ”he said, trying the card again. “Myry sucks.”

The melbourne train system is set for a major change – but it is nice to know that some things will always remain the same.
