Rangers make ‘unwanted’ NHL history after being shut out in first three home games

The New York Rangers made unfortunate history on Tuesday night, becoming the first team in NHL history to be eliminated in the first three home games of a season. The 180-minute goalless game at Madison Square Garden marked the longest home drought to start a season in league history.

Only those that have been gone for a long time Pittsburgh Pirates (1928), the Hib Milks endured a longer wait without scoring, going 187 minutes and 19 seconds before finally scoring at Duquesne Gardens. The modern-era record belonged to the Florida Panthers (2001), who went 155 minutes and 17 seconds without scoring a home goal.
Stuart Skinner stopped 30 shots as the Edmonton Oilers defeated the New York Rangers 2-0. Skinner was particularly sharp in the final two periods, making 24 of his 30 saves in the final 40 minutes to earn his eighth career shutout.

With his performance, Skinner joined Nikolai Khabibulin as the only goalies in Oilers history to have a shutout against the Rangers. Khabibulin achieved this feat on October 22, 2011 in Edmonton.

Despite several quality chances, the Rangers were unable to find the back of the net in their last loss to the Oilers. Artemi Panarin He was denied by Skinner on the breakaway, Will Cuylle’s shot from close range was stopped after a turnover and fourth-string players Adam Edstrom and Matt Rempe saw good opportunities beggared. A few shots even hit the crossbar, adding to his frustration. The Rangers failed to score in their first 90 shots at home, and fans booed after consecutive power play failures. They will look to bounce back on the road with games in Toronto and Montreal before returning home to face Minnesota on Monday night.
