Elmo makes it clear he’s rooting for Team USA after New York Knicks fans put his head on a pike

It’s hard to be mad at Elmo on “Sesame Street.” It’s actually kind of hard to be mad at any Muppet (except Pepe the King Prawn; he’ll always try to steal your girl if given even half a chance), but this week Knicks fans were still mad at Elmo for not picking a side in the NBA Finals.
Elmo wasn’t going to stand idly by and watch his head parade through the streets of New York on a pike, and in the USMNT’s match against Australia, the little red Muppet who spoke in the third person picked a side.
And it’s all in the USA, baby.

“To be clear, Elmo wants Team USA to win, okay?” he said. “Elmo loves everyone. Let me be clear. Don’t make an issue of it. Thank you.”
It’s not every day you see the citizens of “Sesame Street” go into PR crisis mode. This wasn’t possible since people started asking questions about Bert and Ernie’s living arrangements.

But hey, the last time Elmo whipped people into such a frenzy was back in the Tickle Me Elmo days, and at least they were excited to see him then.
They weren’t doing this to the poor guy.
Actually, come to think of it, I may have seen footage similar to this taken at Kmart in 1997… but it would still be really hard to see this happening to Elmo more than once in a week.
This is a nice change of pace. Maybe this time we’ll see the opposite happen. While Knicks fans declare war on Elmo, perhaps US fans can adopt Elmo as a quasi-mascot.

Until things go wrong, his head could end up with a one-way ticket to Pike City.
Poor man.
